John Porcellino
by François Vigneault
We got to know John P. while he and his delightful wife Misun were living here in San Francisco (and especially while organizing the 2006 Zine Fest), and he has always been supportive of Family Style. John's simple, beautiful, and sad comics have been a true inspiration ever since I read an interview with him in the Comics Journal long, long ago! For much more King-Cat goodness visite John's website!

"John Porcellino's comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive."
-Chris Ware, Acme Novelty Library

King-Cat Comics & Stories #67

This is the last issue John published before leaving San Francisco, and there are some lovely thoughts and observations on the City here. Lots of short comics including the hillarious "Courting", and also a longer prose piece "Square-Head John". And of course lots of letters, Top 40, and more. Published by Spit and a Half.

KC67. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 40pp, b&w $3.00

Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man

For a five years John P. worked as a "mosquito abatement man", finding and killing vast quantities of mosquito larvae in the swamps and bogs of rural Illinois... He documneted his on-the-job exploits, revealing a sensetive young man deeply in tune with nature and a growing awareness of the world around him. A great collection of King-Cat stories spanning almost the entire range of John P.'s carreer, from scratchy, punk-rock influenced strips to incredibly nuanced and thoughtful comics from recent years, including "The Owl", one of his most beautiful stories. Published by La Mano.
Winner of the 2005 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Anthology or Collection

A Tapir Caper
by Raquel Reyes

Our long-time pal Raquel has produced a new edition of A Tapir Caper just for Family Style! When a grumpy tapir is chased from his home by a tiger and gets lost, it finds help from an unexpected source... A heart-warming and hillarious tale that's reminiscent of a classic children's story, but with a subtle sense of humor sure to delight any one. Fantastic jungle landscapes and adorable characters make this comic/picture book a visual treat. Hand-printed lino-block wrap-around cover on textured paper (available in brown and aqua).

RR01 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 32pp, b&w $3.50

Further Notes on my
Unfortunate Condition (New!)
by Nick St. John

The premire comic from Nick St. John, Further Notes is a collection of playful, dream-like tales. The only survivor of the apocalypse surveys the landscape from a hot air balloon, a traveling manta ray pays a visit to old friends, and more... Delightful illustrations blend with precise narration to create a tone of child-like mischief tinged with sorrow. A terrific debut.

NSJ01 4 1/4" x 5 1/2", 24pp, b&w $2.00

The End of a Perfect Day
by Joyce Leslie

Captain Joyce Leslie has been chronicling his travels both foreign and domestic for years now in his ongoing per-zine/travelogue The End of a Perfect Day. A penchant for wine, women, and song and a classic, cut + paste zine aesthetic make for a revealing look at a vibrant world of bike punks, modern-day hobos, and squatter culture.

The End of a Perfect Day #10

The latest issue of Joyce Leslie's ongoing travelogue finds him bicycling around the City of Angels in search of the "Los Angeles of the Mind." From sipping wine in Grandma Lois' slanting house in earthquake prone Portuguese Bend to discovering the hidden but powerful bike culture of L.A. the insights and adventures are a treat. Self-published.

EPD10. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 44pp, $2.00

The End of a Perfect Day #9

"Tales of Anatolia" chronicles the Captain's travels in Turkey. Lots of impromptu dancing on train cars and wine drinking in the countryside but this issue has its share of cultural insights into a land that spans two very distinct worlds. Look for a very brief cameo from Friends author François Vigneault in this issue! Self-published.

EPD09. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 40pp, $2.00

The End of a Perfect Day #8

"The Captain Goes to Puerto Rico!" Lots of misadventures in the future 51st State. Joyce Leslie encounters needle-strewn tropical beaches, the infamous walled-in, gang-run neighborhood of La Perla, and an affable former drug-runner by the name of Bienvenidos, and he hears tales of life in Puerto Rico that shock even him. Self-published.

EPD08. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 44pp, $2.00
